Cold weather freezes pipes; causes flooding in Antigo

ANTIGO (WAOW) -- Frigid weather can harm more than just your body. It can also cause quite a mess.

City workers in Antigo have dealt with bursting pipes at 3 different houses, all in the last 2 weeks. They say water meters are usually in the basement, and if it gets below freezing, pipes can break, making a big and costly mess.

"Two were pretty extensive," explained Antigo Street Commissioner Bob Piskula. "About 500,00 gallons of water sprayed inside the houses. It does go out the floor drain and out to the sewer, but they do get awful wet and awful damp."

Depending on where the leak is, Piskula said it could get pretty expensive. The property owner is the one who foots the bill for all damages. If the house is in foreclosure, then it's up to the bank.

He also adds, frosted or fogged windows are an indicator that moisture is inside a home.  If you notice anything out of the ordinary in your neighborhood, you're urged to call the public works department. They can shut off the water from the street.
