Legislature set to pass tax cut for new jobs

MADISON (AP) -- The Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature is set to pass a bill that provides a tax deduction for every new job created in the state.

Democrats say the measure up for passage in both the Senate and Assembly on Tuesday will do little to motivate companies to add workers since the tax benefit ranges from roughly $90 to $300 per new job.

The measure is part of Republican Gov. Scott Walker's agenda to cut taxes, make it harder to sue businesses, and create a new Commerce Department. He says all of the measures together will improve the state's business climate and lead to more jobs.

But Democrats argue the measures won't create jobs and will only add to the state's budget woes. They cost about $120 million over two years.
