MERRILL (WAOW) -- The Merrill School Board approves a plan to possibly lay-off more than 30 teachers in the district. The plan calls for preliminary lay-off notices to be handed out in the next week.

These notices are by no means final, but either way, 34 teachers will see their names on the top of those notices. The possible cuts include four tech ed teachers and four business teachers, which could jeopardize their entire departments.

Parents in the district said they're interested to see how the final budget plays out.

"Perhaps what we need to be looking at is not only what can we cut but what can we do better," said Julie Stevenson, who has children in the district. "I put my trust in the fact that they are doing their very best and that's all you can ask anyone to do."

The board also discussed a possible non-binding referendum for the April ballot which they would have to decide on by February 16th. One of the main issues is finding out how much money they'll receive from the state. The board is looking into a tiered approach to budget cuts. But they're playing the waiting game to see just how much they will need to cut.
