Photo ID requirement up for public hearing

MADISON (AP) -- A requirement that all Wisconsin voters show a photo identification before casting their ballots is up for a public hearing.

The hearing Wednesday is before the state Senate committee that handles election issues.

Under the bill, Wisconsin would join 27 other states in requiring that photo identification be shown before voters can register to vote or cast ballots.

Republicans hope to have the bill in place in time for the April 5 elections.

Republicans have pushed for it as a way to combat voter fraud. But Democrats counter there is no evidence of widespread fraud and all the requirement would do is make it harder for people to vote.
