UWMC group returns from Egypt unaffected by unrest

WAUSAU (WAOW)--A group of University of Wisconsin students, staff and community members just returned from a school sponsored trip to Egypt, an area currently dealing with political turmoil and violence.
The group of 26 travelers included some students and staff from the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County, as well as community members from Wausau, Merrill and Rib Mountain.
Group organizers said throughout the trip the group was very well protected and never came close to the demonstrations that started towards the end of their stay.
While in Cairo and Alexandria the group was accompanied by an armed guard.
Group member Vicki Richmond-Hawkins said the group did have a police escort back to their hotel after a night out in Alexandria, but their tour guide said it was common practice.
As long as it is safe to travel to Egypt, Richmond-Hawkings said there are plans to make the trip again next January.
