GREEN BAY (WAOW) – With just 41 seconds remaining in regulation, St. Norbert's Johan Ryd scored to break a 1-1 tie and give the host Green Knights the 2-1 victory over UW-Stevens Point on Thursday evening at Cornerstone Center.
The Pointers held the nation's second-ranked team without a goal in the game's opening period. In the second period, the Green Knights scored on the power play at the 12:26 mark to take the edge.
Max Bobrow answered for the Pointers three minutes later with his seventh goal of the season to knot the score at 1-1.
For the first 19 minutes of the third the Pointers spent much of the time in control, firing nine shots on net, only to be turned away each time by St. Norbert's B.J. O'Brien. Then, with 41 ticks remaining, Ryd sent his sixth game-winning goal of the season into the net, giving the Knights the edge.
The Pointers controlled the ensuing face-off and pulled goaltender Nick Graves for the final 32 seconds, managing to get a final shot in net, only to have it called off because the net was off. St. Norbert staved off the final attack by the Pointers and preserved the 2-1 victory.
Graves tallied 20 saves on the evening but suffered the loss while O'Brien tallied 24.
UW-Stevens Point returns to action Friday evening at K.B. Willett Arena when they host UW-Eau Claire in action beginning at 7 p.m. The evening is also the team's second annual "Put a Check to Cancer" night, with the Pointer's game-worn jerseys being auctioned off with the proceeds benefiting local cancer patients and cancer research.
