STEVENS POINT (PRESS RELEASE) – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team used a 46-24 scoring advantage in the paint to sweep the season series against the Yellowjackets of UW-Superior with an 89-48 victory Saturday afternoon at Bennett Court.
A Louis Hurd layup capped off an 11-4 run to start the game and gave the Pointers the seven point lead with 14:46 left in the first period and the Pointers continued to add on.
Scott Hoelzel was able to push the Pointers lead to 22 points with a layup assisted from Hurd to give the Pointers a 41-19 advantage with 2:20 in the first. The Pointers took a 42-23 lead into the half.
The Pointers were able to continue to add onto their lead throughout the second period shooting a blistering 50.8 percent from the floor. The Pointers took a 41 point lead in the final seconds of the game and came away with a 89-48 victory.
In the victory the Pointers bench dominated, outscoring the Yellowjackets 47-22. UWSP was also able to win the turnover battle committing eight and forcing 17 leading to a 24-3 points off turnovers advantage.
Dan Tillema and Jerrel Harris both led the Pointers with 12 points and DeVon Jackson added with 11 points off the bench. Hurd and Jordan Brezinksi also scored in double figures with 10 points each. Hurd also added a team-high nine rebounds.
Ben Aalfs was the only Yellowjacket in double figures with 11 points.
The Pointers shot 50.8 percent from the floor compared to the Yellowjackets' 33.3 percent.
The Pointer's also held Jake Smith, the fourth leading scorer in the WIAC to seven points on 3-of-12 shooting on the day. Nick Krull did most of the defensive work on Smith, and he also had three steals and two blocks on the day.
UW-Stevens Point (17-3, 9-2 WIAC) will return to action on Tuesday when they host UW-Stout in action beginning at 7 p.m. in Stevens Point.
