MADSION (AP) -- Wisconsin's sturgeon spearing season starts next month, and it promises to be huge.
The season gets under way on the Lake Winnebago system Feb. 12. State wildlife officials say they've sold a record 12,423 licenses.
They say conditions look good this year. Water clarity is fair to good so far and expected to improve barring a warm-up that could send melting snow running into the lakes..
Ron Grishaber of Appleton set a new state record on last year's opening day with a 212.2-pound sturgeon.
