Blizzard takes aim at southern Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Drivers are urged to stay off the roads as a blizzard barrels toward southern Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Emergency Management spokesman Tod Pritchard says winds are blowing at 35-40 mph across the southern third of the state, with gusts reaching 45-50 mph.

Gov. Scott Walker has declared a state of emergency across southern Wisconsin ahead of the storm. The executive order activates the Wisconsin National Guard to help local authorities.

Walker also ordered state offices and University of Wisconsin System campuses across southern Wisconsin to close to the public.

Some school districts have already decided to cancel classes Wednesday, including the state's largest, Milwaukee Public Schools.

In Kenosha, trucker Kevin Trongeau says road conditions are "absolutely terrible." He says winds are strong enough to "blow you right across three lanes" of highway.
