STEVENS POINT (PRESS RELEASE) – Jerrel Harris shot a perfect 8-for-8 in the first half and gave the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team a 38-point lead at halftime as the Pointers cruised to victory, defeating the Blue Devils of UW-Stout 101-50 Wednesday evening at Bennett Court.
UW-Stevens Point came out of the gate slow as UW-Stout was able to take an early lead with 16:28 left in the first half thanks to a jumper by Steve Pax.
Following the Blue Devils possession, Louis Hurd connected on a jumper and then followed it up with a lay-up and foul to retake the lead for the Pointers at 11-7.
Harris and Scott Hoelzel brought the momentum back to Point's side as Harris was a perfect 8-for-8, including 2-for-2 on three-point attempts, and Hoelzel pulled down an offensive board and slammed it home for two of his eight first half points.
UW-Stevens Point dominated just about every category in the first half. They were able to hold the Blue Devil's to just 22.6 percent shooting while they connected on 73.3 percent of their shots. Point was also able to force 13 turnovers, converting them into 24 points. UW-Stout forced the Pointers into seven first half turnovers but were unable to convert any of them into points.
In the second half, the Pointers continued to pile it on throughout the second half and were able to shut down the WIAC's leading scoring offense, averaging 80.7 points per game coming into the week.
Point was also looking to crack the century mark for the first time this season and Adam Abegglen was able to score a lay-up with two seconds left, resulting in a 101-50 victory.
For the game, the Pointers connected on 54.0 percent of their shots and also shot well from the line, connecting on 24-of-27 from the charity stripe. The Point defense held UW-Stout to 28.3 percent shooting and forced them into 20 turnovers.
Harris led the way, finishing the game with 20 points. Tyler Tillema and Vinnay Ritchay each chipped in with 12 apiece and Hurd and Dan Tillema scored 11 and 10, respectfully. Hoelzel grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to go along with his eight points.
Alex Oman led UW-Stout with 13 off the bench and was the only Blue Devil in double figures. The Pointers were able to hold Eric Hostetter, the third leading scorer in the WIAC, to just two points on 1-of-9 shooting. Hostetter led the team with six rebounds and two steals.
The last time the Pointers cracked the 100-point mark was December 19, 2009, a 105-43 victory at home against Wisconsin Lutheran College. The last WIAC game in which the Pointers accomplished the feat came back on January 17, 2009 when they traveled to UW-Superior and brought back home a 104-60 victory.
UW-Stevens Point (18-3, 10-2 WIAC) will take the weekend off thanks to a bye in league action and will return to the hardwood Wednesday, February 9th when they travel to UW-Eau Claire for a match-up with the Blugolds. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
