Frontier Airlines heads to Rhinelander bringing competition to CWA

MOSINEE (WAOW)--The Northwoods will soon see more flights out of Rhinelander, thanks to a low fare air carrier coming to the Oneida County Airport.

Travelers will soon have the option to fly to more than 70 connection destinations. Frontier Airlines added Rhinelander's Oneida County Airport to its list of destinations.

"We've know about Frontier and Rhinelander for sometime now," said Central Wisconsin Airport Administrator Tony Yaron. "We knew Frontier had an essential air service application out with the department of transportation and they won that bid."

Yaron says he also applied to Frontier, hoping the airlines would become a future option to CWA passengers. But Yaron says Republic Airways, the owner of Frontier, pulled a fast one on everyone by giving 8 of Frontier's planes to Delta.

"Republic told Frontier to give those air crafts to Delta, flying them under the contract of Delta. Telling them now you're going to have to figure out your spring schedule with the equipment you got left," said Yaron.

With less planes Frontier now has to first figure out how to fill their spring schedule at the Oneida County Airport before Frontier will even consider making CWA another add on but Yaron said he's not worried. "It's just a matter of time before we get word. One way or another, they'll continue service into CWA. It's a give and take, market pressures and its changing all the time, very dimensional times we are dealing with right now."
