MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) --The Marathon County Board could soon shrink. Members agreed Wednesday to further discuss the idea of dropping its membership from 38 to 33.
Right now, the Marathon County board is the largest County Board in the state by one member. And with redistricting due to the 2010 census on the horizon, the board has spent many months discussing reducing it's size.
Wednesday afternoon, the county's Executive Committee agreed to bring the idea of dropping to 33 members before the full board for further discussion. However, that decision wasn't unanimous.
Some members believe shrinking the board will reduce input on issues and mean more committee meetings for members.
Those in favor say a smaller board could be more effective.
According to results from a survey earlier this month, reducing the board size would most likely not save the county any money.
The decision is not yet final. At its next meeting, the full county board will take up the matter.
