Portage County authorities find drugs, bombs in Amherst

AMHERST (WAOW)--Authorities raided an apartment complex in Amherst on February 2nd expecting to find drugs. Instead they made a potentially explosive discovery.

After a two week investigation into drugs in Amherst, sheriff's, police and drug agents make a surprising discovery in an Amherst apartment: pipe bombs.

Portage County Detective Gary Koehmstedt said they were looking for drugs, but instead found three pipes with caps on the ends and two glass jars filled with powder.

That's when The Marathon County bomb squad was called in to secure the complex on Clinton Court.

20-year-old Robert Anderson is currently in custody in connection to the bomb materials. Detectives said Anderson did not plan to use the bombs to harm others.

"The pipe bombs are a concern, but there is no indication that he did it to harm anybody or to blow anybody up. Nobody should feel threatened about what happened out there," said Koehmstedt.

Authorities found about $3,000 worth of cocaine in another apartment raided the same day.

27-year-old Nicholas Luke and 21-year-old Josh Deyo are in custody. Authorities say both men will have charges of possession and intent to sell.

The investigation is still ongoing and charges are yet to be filed.
