Wis. offers help to apply for specialty-crop grant

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- People with ideas to improve one of the state's specialty-crop industries can now apply for federal grants to help turn their ideas into reality.

Specialty crops include fruits, vegetables, culinary herbs and spices, medicinal plants, flowers, and nursery plants.

State officials are offering workshops next week to help potential applicants figure out how to navigate the application process. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection will hold a session Tuesday evening in Wausau and Thursday afternoon in Madison.

Universities, tribes and private and nonprofit groups are among the groups encouraged to apply. Eligible projects must benefit the whole specialty-crop industry, not just an individual applicant.

Last year, DATCP awarded more than $943,000 to 23 projects.
