STEVENS POINT (PRESS RELEASE)- The UW-Stevens Point wrapped up their second WIAC Regular Season Championship in the past four seasons as they defeated UW-River Falls 71-58 on Saturday at the Berg Gymnasium.
The win puts the Pointers at 14-0 in conference play as they will try to become just the fifth team to go undefeated in the WIAC in league history.
Ashley Averkamp led the Pointers as she finished the game with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Senior Britta Petersen had 12 points on Senior Day to help guide the Pointers to victory. Fellow seniors Andrea Flease and Christin Coles also had big days for the Pointers.
Flease finished with 10 points, five assists and four steals while Coles had eight first half points, making two three pointers.
The Pointers opened up a 38-27 lead after the game's first 20 minutes as she had the Pointers shot 50 percent from three point range, making six of 12 shots from long distance in the opening half.
The Pointers built their lead up to 22 points with 10:21 remaining in the half as the game was well decided by that point.
The Falcons made a bit of a run late as they cut the lead to nine points with less than two minutes left, but the Pointers finished the game strong, winning by 13 points.
Cassie Bandow finished the game with a team high seven rebounds as the Pointers had 13 offensive rebounds on the day.
The Pointer defense was also strong as they forced 27 Falcon turnovers. The Pointers also had 19 assists compared to River Falls nine.
Next up for the Pointers is a trip to Platteville on Wednesday night to take on the Pioneers. The Pointers will then close out the regular season on the road on Saturday at La Crosse.
Locking up the WIAC Championship means the Pointers will have a first round bye in the WIAC tournament and will have home court advantage as well.
