RIVER FALLS (PRESS RELEASE) - The UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie against UW-River Falls Saturday night and with it secured the No. 4 seed in the NCHA Tournament set to begin next weekend. The Pointers will host UW-Eau Claire in playoff action at K.B. Willett Arena.
Nick Graves made 34 saves for the Pointers as his big game helped the Pointers earn the tie.
The first two periods saw no goals score as each goalkeeper was on top of their game for the first 40 minutes of action.
It didn't take long into the third period to get the games first goal as UW-River Falls scored on a goal by Andy Inderieden to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead 1:53 into the final period.
Nic Polaski then had the answer for the Pointers as his power play goal 5:26 into the final period tied the game at one goal apiece.
Polaski was assisted by Max Bobrow and Brandon Busse on the play.
That would be the last goal of the game as both goalies continued their strong play, ending the game with a 1-1 tie.
The Pointers knew coming in that they needed a win or tie for the four seed in the NCHA Tournament as the Blugolds of Eau Claire had a shot to steal the four seed with a win and a Pointer loss.
Next weekend the Pointers will play Eau Claire on Friday and Saturday night. If one team wins both of those games they will move on to the semi-finals. If the two teams split a mini game will take place immediately after Saturday's game to determine the quarterfinal winner.
Last season the Pointers won their quarterfinal match-up with UW-Stout by winning the mini game.
The Pointers finished the regular season with a 12-12-1 record and an 8-9-1 mark in NCHA play. They won their final seven home games of the year and are 7-2-1 since January 1st.
