State senators mum on talks over union bill

MADISON (AP) -- Republican state senators are keeping quiet about their talks over Gov. Scott Walker's plan to take away collective bargaining rights from nearly all public employees.

Senators met behind closed doors on Monday in the Capitol to talk about the bill that was up for a public hearing on Tuesday.

Several senators contacted early Tuesday morning did not immediately return telephone messages seeking comment or their mailboxes were full.

AFT-Wisconsin lobbyist Scott Spector says he does not know what direction talks among Republican senators went on Monday. Spector says the union has meetings set with lawmakers on Tuesday.

Sen. Robert Cowles, a Republican from Green Bay, says lawmakers are still talking about Walker's bill. He would not comment on whether there were enough votes for it to pass the Senate.
