UW-Madison chancellor urges delay on union bill

MADISON (AP) -- University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin is urging the Legislature's budget committee to delay action on Gov. Scott Walker's proposal doing away with collective bargaining rights for public employees.

Martin said in a statement Wednesday that no vote should be taken on the bill until there has been an opportunity for negotiations. Walker said earlier in the day that he was talking with Republican lawmakers about possible changes, but he wouldn't compromise on the bill's core principles.

Martin says before curtailing bargaining rights, lawmakers should "step back and make a sincere effort to develop more creative solutions."

University employees and students have made a strong presence in the protests at the Capitol that drew 13,000 people on Tuesday and thousands more on Wednesday.
