La Crosse students walk-out to protest

LA CROSSE (WXOW) - Students from at least three La Crosse area high schools walked out of class Wednesday.

Many students said the walk out is designed to support teachers.

Students from Holmen, Logan and Central high school walked out of class chanting and holding signs saying they were supporting teachers rights.

Authorities were on hand to patrol traffic and the crowds.

About 1,000 students from Holmen high school left school and walked to the Village Hall.

Eight-hundred students from Central high school stood outside the school along Losey Blvd.

Close to 500 students at Logan high school left school and assembled in the parking lot

Students we spoke with say they are upset with Governor Walkers proposal and they hope by walking out of class a message will reach the Governor.

School officials from all three school say they did notify parents and staff when they heard students were walking out of class and they alerted authorities so they could monitor the situation.

Holmen students were allowed to protest without punishment Wednesday if a parent called the school and excused them from class.

If a parent did not call, those students will receive an un-excused absence which carries a consequence which may include detention.

Logan and Central school students who left classes will have to make up the time they missed.
