MADISON (WKOW)--Schools in the Oregon, DeForest and Monona Grove districts are closed on Thursday due to the statewide teacher walkout called for by the Wisconsin Education Association Council.
Local school district officials say the anticipation of so many teachers being absent to attend the protest at the state capitol forced them to cancel class; although some, if not all, are officially requiring teachers to be at work.
As of 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday, there was no announcement of closing Madison schools on Thursday.
The Madison school district canceled classes on Wednesday after about 40% of its teachers called in sick.
Many of them demonstrated at the capitol against Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to end collective bargaining with unions representing them and 175,000 state and local government workers.
