724th Engineer Battalion back in Wisconsin Friday

CAMP DOUGLAS, Wis. (AP) -- Hundreds of Wisconsin National Guard soldiers return to the state Friday.

About 300 soldiers from the 724th Engineer Battalion will be back at Volk Field where they will be met by senior National Guard officials and family members. A brief ceremony will be held before the soldiers are taken to nearby Fort McCoy to begin about five days of demobilization before their release.

The battalion formally ended its mission in Iraq Monday and transferred its responsibilities to the Army 326th Engineer Battalion, based at Fort Campbell, Ky.

The 724th Engineer Battalion deployed last April with about 400 soldiers from units in four northern Wisconsin communities; including Chippewa Falls, Hayward, Superior and Medford.
