Senate Democrats set to return from out of state

WREX out of Rockford, Illinois reported some of the 13 Wisconsin Senators who left the state are headed back.

They were found at the Clock Tower restaurant in Rockford.

Those senators were reportedly attempting to avoid voting on a bill that they believe would strip public employees of collective bargaining rights.

No Democrats showed up for Thursday's session, including Julie Lassa.

Newsline Nine spoke with her by phone, but she would not tell us if she was on that bus.

"We are standing with the working men and women of this state," Lassa said. "We believe it is very important and we are excercising our only option, constitutionally, in slowing this vote down"

Also Conover Democrat Jim Holperin said he felt he had to cross the border to do his constituents justice.

"This is something we felt we needed more than three days on for discussion," Holperin said.

The Republicans need one Democratic senator to be present at the session in order to vote.

Newsline Nine also spoke with Republican leaders today including Representative Scott Suder.

"We are not getting rid of unions," Suder said. "Unions will still negotiate for wages and there will be more grievance procedures and that's what a number of people asked us to do"
