Protesters in Djibouti rally to replace president

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- Thousands of demonstrators are gathering in the tiny East African nation of Djibouti to demand that the president step down after two terms.

It's the latest in a series of rallies in Djibouti modeled after political demonstrations in North Africa and the Middle East.

President Ismail Omar Guelleh has served two terms and faces election in April. Guelleh's family has been in power for more than three decades.

Djibouti is a city-state of 750,000 people across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen. It hosts the only U.S. base in Africa.

One presidential challenger, Abdourahman Boreh, said Friday that the Djibouti rally was peaceful and that thousands of people were at the demonstration.
