Former Senator Feingold rallies Wis. labor protesters

MADISON (AP) -- Protesters rallying outside the Capitol applauded as former U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold shook hands.

Some broken into chants of "Feingold for Governor" on Friday as the Wisconsin Democrat made his way through the protesters, who oppose GOP Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to cut collective bargaining rights for most public employees.

Feingold said the plan is "an outrageous assault on working people" and that opponents' first step should be to stop Walker's bill from clearing the Legislature. He also said Wisconsin voters will take to the polls in 2012 to show Republican legislators who have supported the bill that "actions have consequences."

Feingold lost his Senate seat in the 2010 mid-term election to Republican Ron Johnson.
