HAMBURG (WAOW) -- Police said slippery roads caused a school bus with 20 children on board to crash. The bus was carrying children to Maple Grove Elementary School.
Police said the bus driver either failed to stop, or was unable to stop, at the intersection of 9th Lane and County Highway F in Hamburg. Another car then hit the bus and it crashed into a utility pole.
Investigators said it took a little extra time to get the children out safely because the power to the utility pole had to be shut off first.
"The buses are just tremendous vehicles for protection," said Merrill School District Assistant Superintendent Bruce Anderson. "Yet the reality of where we live, the conditions of the roads, means that sometimes accidents happen."
Medics transported a few of the children to Aspirus hospital as a precautionary measure, but there were no major injuries. Police report that bus driver faces a traffic fine for the crash.
