Budget repair bill could cut funding for Portage Co. transit

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -- City leaders in Portage County believe they will have to cut public transportation if the budget repair bill passes.
Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson said losing collective bargaining rights would make public transit ineligible for federal funding-- making it impossible to pay for the service.
"By stripping collective bargaining, in essence, making it illegal for municipalities to do so in the state of Wisconsin," Mayor Halverson explained. "The City of Stevens Point, literally, has our entire transit system on the chopping block now."
According to the Department of Labor, U.S. law requires that collective bargaining rights remain in place to get federal funds.
Halverson says losing federal funding would cripple the public transit system.
