Details emerge about possible UW-Madison split

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Details are emerging about what the flagship UW-Madison might look like if it were spun off from the rest of the University of Wisconsin system.

UW-Madison has posted on its website draft language as it is likely to appear in Gov. Scott Walker's proposed budget.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports the potential changes would create a new public body -- similar to the model of the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics authority.

UW-Madison would have its own 21-member board of trustees and would no longer be considered part of the executive branch of state government. The board of trustees would be authorized to set and manage tuition rates.

The Madison campus would still receive state funding, but it would get it directly from the state through a single block grant.
