MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -- According to new numbers from the CDC, 21,000 people across the country caught whooping cough last year.

That number includes 18 from Marathon County. Local leaders said whooping cough, or Pertussis, is most common during the winter. Symptoms can start small, similar to what you might see if you have a cold, but then coughing gets more intense.

"The risk in adults getting Pertussis is that they will give it to a child who is more susceptible and will have more problems and complications from Pertussis," said Marathon County Director of Family Health and Communicable Disease Eileen Eckardt

Local leaders said the disease is preventable and the best way to combat the cough is immunization. Representatives from the Marathon County Health Department said even though it doesn't guarantee you won't get it, the shot will at least help minimize symptoms and decrease the amount of time you are contagious.
