Wesley Paul Abitz, age 62, of Wausau, WI, died Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at the William S Middleton VA Hospital, Hospice Care, Madison, WI.
Wesley was born on June 15, 1948, in Wausau, to Wallace (Wally) and Phyllis (Hollinger) Abitz. Wes graduated from Wausau High School in 1967. He was a United States Army veteran serving from May 1968 to January 1971. He was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY, and was then stationed in South Korea.
He worked with his father, Wally, and brother, Chuck, at West Side Paint and Floors, then moved to Chippewa Falls and was a distributor for Golden Guernsey. He also worked at American Eagle in Chippewa Falls, and was sole proprietor as a carpenter. He moved back home to Wausau in 2005 to enjoy being closer to his family. He was an avid NASCAR race fan of Dale Earnhardt and JR and gave his nephew, Chuck II a hard time about Ryan Newman. He was the mechanic for Dick Trickle. Wes was the mechanic for his cousin, Bob Abitz, who raced at Rib Mountain Speedway with Larry Detjens.
He was a lifetime member of the NRA and VFW. Wes enjoyed hunting and traveling to Canada, hunting Elk and Mule Deer in Colorado and Montana, and hunting with family and friends. He was an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed bowling with family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his three children, Wade Abitz , Amy Abitz-Akey, and Andy Abitz hunting, doing carpentry work with their homes, and enjoying the time with his two Grandsons, Aiden Abitz and Eli Akey.
Survivors include his Mother, Phyllis (Hollinger) Abitz; three children, Wade, Amy (Wade) Akey, Andy; two grandsons Aiden Abitz and Eli Akey; brother Charles (Jean); sister Connie (Steven) Yauck and Sherry; nieces, Jennifer (Nicolas) Silvester and Heather Abitz; nephews, Jonathon (Sara) Yauck and Charles II Abitz and several cousins and friends.
Wesley was preceded in death by his father Wallace Abitz.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. at the Brainard Funeral home, 522 Adams St. Wausau. Reverend Erik Olson will officiate from First English Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 28, 2011 at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Wausau, where Military Honors will be conducted.
The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to all the wonderful doctors and caregivers who took care of Wes, "Dad" at the VA Hospital, ICU and Hospice, in Madison during this time. And to friend, Russell Knoblock, who helped with transportation to and from Madison for his cancer treatments and being a very good friend.
