STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -- Madison law enforcement call authorities around the state for help.

The Portage County Sheriff's Department sent several officers to provide additional security.

The sheriff says officer from Madison were overwhelmed with long hours and thousands of protesters.

"The local police department down there was pretty much overwhelmed with security tasks and the large crowds of 40,000 to 50,000 people. The call came from emergency police services asking if we could put any officers down there on the line," Portage County Sheriff John Charewicz said.

The sheriff's department sent six officers on Tuesday and six more on Thursday. Most officers returned back to Portage County.

The sheriff says there have been no further calls for assistance.
