Congress tries to avoid shutdown

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congress gets back to work today, with a possible government shutdown just days away.

The House could act as soon as tomorrow on a Republican plan to extend the government's funding authority for two weeks.

Their proposal includes $4 billion worth of spending cuts and Majority Leader Eric Cantor says he hopes the Senate goes along:

A Democratic spokesman calls the plan encouraging, but reiterates Democrats would like a four week extension.
