Helen Tinkham Hammes, 94, Wausau, died at Aspirus Hospice House on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011.
She was born in Port Washington, WI, on March 26, 1916. Helen graduated from Shorewood High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in economics. She married her high school sweetheart Richard Tinkham on Oct. 12, 1938, and moved to Wausau in 1940, where he practiced law. Together they spent many wonderful weekends at their Fence Lake cottage in northern Wisconsin. Richard preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1978. She married Dr. George Hammes in Sept. 1981, and lived happily with him in Wausau and Sanibel Island, FL, until his death on Feb. 26, 2000.
Helen enjoyed golf, bridge, and world travel. She volunteered with the Children's Service Society, and served as president of the Wausau Hospital Volunteers and the Wausau Country Club Women's Division. She also served on the Exhibitions Committee of the Woodson Art Museum and was a member of the Bascom Hill Society, UW-Madison.
Helen is survived by her two children Thomas Tinkham (Jacque Hauser), Minneapolis; and Nancy (Peter) Hessert, Wausau, as well as by five step-children: Mary (Roger) Vilwock, Sun Prairie, WI; Margaret (Peter) Jung, Henderson, Nevada; Michael (Peg) Hammes, Le Claire, Iowa; John (Ronnie) Hammes, Cedarburg, WI; and Mark Hammes, Manor, Texas. Her five grandchildren are Tamara Tinkham (Sam Dresser), Lake Elmo, MN; Liza Tinkham (Brad Aubrecht), Crystal, MN; Taylor Tinkham, St. Paul, MN; David (Ashley) Hessert, Gig Harbor, WA; and Mary Jo Hessert, Portsmouth, VA. Helen also enjoyed her eight step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass for Helen will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. Visitation will be held in the church prior to the service beginning at 9:30 a.m. A family burial service will take place at Restlawn Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
