MERRILL (WAOW) -- More than thirty Merrill teachers will receive final layoff notices over the course of the next two weeks.
With two fewer notices to hand out than they originally anticipated, the school board approved final layoffs for 34 teachers next year. Merrill school leaders said they're glad they started taking a look at their budget early so they would have time to plan for the future.
"This year it certainly played to our advantage," said Merrill Superintendent Dr. Lisa Snyder, "because we started way back in the fall having these discussions in our community with our board gathering input and data."
The board is still looking to the state to find out how much of its budget will be cut and plan to discuss next year's numbers at their first March school board meeting. About 220 teachers currently work for the Merrill school district.
