Governor Walker to tour state touting new budget

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- One day after presenting his new biennial budget, Gov. Scott Walker says he's going around the state to discuss his plan's merits.

He started with a press conference Wednesday in Milwaukee. He told reporters he's making tough decisions now to prevent future generations from being saddled with today's bills.

Walker's budget relies on getting concessions from government employees to help pay for about $1 billion cuts in aid to schools, counties and cities.

The governor has warned of at least 1,500 layoffs if the 14 Senate Democrats who fled the state to avoid voting on Walker's budget-repair bill remain out of state.

Walker says he'll push off any layoffs as far as possible. But he says the Democrats have made their point by staying away and it's time to return.
