WAUSAU (WAOW) -- Under the new budget proposal, The Solid Waste Management Department in Marathon County says the state would no longer require a recycling program.

The department also says the state would no longer provide municipalities with money to offset the costs of picking up trash from the curb.`

The owner of IROW, a company that provides recycling services, says it's too early to tell how this will affect the industry.

An administrator for The Solid Waste Management Department says this measure could stunt the economic development of the state.

"Eliminating the recycling mandate seems counterintuitive to economic development because it's such a strong industry in Wisconsin. 25 years of infrastructure have been built since the initiation of the recycling law," Meleesa Johnson of The Marathon County Landfill said.
