Northwestern Wis. lodge to remain open

CABLE, Wis. (AP) -- The famous Telemark Resort in northwestern Wisconsin will remain open.

A deal was announced Tuesday to keep open the home of the annual American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Telemark Partners LLC will acquire the lodge and about 1,000 acres of land. The partners plan to create an Olympic-level training center for cross-country skiers, mountain bikers and snowboarders.

Telemark Resort, in Cable, was reopened Jan. 20 in time for this year's Birkebeiner.

A year ago, Telemark Partners unveiled plans to update the rooms and replace the 1970s look of the lodge. But when the deal stalled, the Telemark Interval Owners Association voted to surrender Telemark to the mortgage holder.

Telemark was founded in 1946. The current lodge was built in 1972.
