Way for Wis. to save on debt restructuring floated

MADISON (AP) -- There may be a way for the state of Wisconsin to save $165 million on debt restructuring after missing an earlier deadline.

The bill that would have done that also went after collective bargaining rights of public workers, which led to Senate Democrats fleeing the state and indefinitely stopping passage of the measure.

Walker has notified unions that since the bill hasn't passed, he may have to lay off 1,500 state workers and make additional deep spending cuts to balance this year's budget. It is projected to be $137 million short by July 1.

A Wednesday memo by the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau outlined accounting moves that could be made to extend the deadline to pass the bill until early April. Walker's administration is reviewing the options.
