Wausau mayor vetoes council's City Square decision
WAUSAU (PRESS RELEASE) – Mayor Jim Tipple announces his veto of the action made on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 by the Common Council designated as File No. 01-1019, Resolution naming the downtown green space bounded by Third, Fourth, Scott and Jefferson Streets.
The naming of the green space in the center of our downtown went through a process whereby the city engaged the public and solicited proposed names. The Park and Recreation Committee reviewed all the names and narrowed them down to the top 10. The public was engaged again and invited to select their choice from the top 10 names. The final public vote was fifty-nine (59%) in favor of the name "The 400 Block", and twenty-one (21%) in favor of the name "City Square".
The City Common Council voted 7-3 in favor of the name "City Square". This undermines the public survey that was taken.
The City Clerk will place this vetoed measure on the March 22, 2011 agenda for council override consideration.
