Jury convicts Milwaukee man on 29 felony counts

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee man accused in a series of sexual assaults over a five-year period has been convicted on 29 felony counts and acquitted on 12.

The Milwaukee County jury delivered its verdict Wednesday in the case of 37-year-old Gregory T. Below.

In closing arguments, Assistant District Attorney Sarah Lewis spent more than two hours summarizing the 41 counts against Below -- ranging from kidnapping to substantial battery to sexual assault. She said the evidence proves them all.

The Journal Sentinel reports that when Below testified in his own defense, he admitted to what he called consensual sex with all the women, often in exchange for crack cocaine. But he gave alternative scenarios to explain their injuries and denied other counts.

Below's arrest last year led to an internal Milwaukee Police Department investigation of how officers handle some reports of sexual assault.
