Group protests against Detroit mayor, other issues

DETROIT (AP) - About 100 people have rallied in protest of efforts bringing more regional control to Detroit's Water and Sewerage Department and investment losses in city pension funds.

Citizens for Honest Government spokesman David Stephen tells the Detroit Free Press that Thursday's demonstration outside City Hall was designed to make sure elected leaders "do what's in the best interest of the people."

Members of the crowd also chanted against the state Legislature's efforts to give new powers to emergency managers of financially struggling schools and cities.

Some also called for the firings of Mayor Dave Bing and a Detroit pension funds attorney. Both funds are under federal investigations.

Bing has come under some criticism for a deal allowing the water system's suburban customers a voice in how the department will be managed.
