MN Senate schedules hearing on Sunday liquor sales

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A proposal to end an age-old ban on Sunday liquor sales in Minnesota is scheduled for a Senate hearing next week, which supporters say is an indication the bill may finally have some traction.

The bill's sponsor, DFL Sen. Roger Reinert of Duluth, says he has enough votes to move the legislation out of committee.

Past attempts to lift the ban have faced strong opposition from the powerful liquor lobby.  Liquor store owners say that opening on Sundays wouldn't provide much extra revenue.

Reinert tells the Star Tribune he's getting some support for his proposal from new Republican senators he describes as "free market people."

The bill is scheduled for a hearing next Wednesday.
