(WAOW) - Three area boys' basketball teams entered Saturday night looking to win a sectional title.
For two, a win meant a trip to state.
In division four, it had been 27 years since the Marathon boys' basketball team advanced to state and this year's team entered Saturday with a good chance to end that.
The Red Raiders jumped in front of Oshkosh Lourdes early and never looked back en route to a 63-37 win.
Merrill was seeking its first trip to state since 1964 in its division two sectional final against Onalaska.
This one proved to be a defensive battle throughout, but it was Merrill who came up with key stops late to hang on for a 38-35 win.
In division one, DC Everest took on Superior with a spot in Super Tuesday on the line. The Evergreens fell behind early, but cut it to seven late in the second half. Unfortunately, they wouldn't get any closer as their season came to a close, 51-35.
In girls' action, Marshfield advances in division one, while Prentice and Newman both move one step closer to state in division five.
