Merrill, Marathon erase years of frustration to advance to state

(WAOW) Last year, the Merrill boys' basketball team watched in disappointment as Antigo stormed the court on its way to Madison.

It was a familiar feeling for the Blue Jays, who hadn't been to state since 1964. Saturday night, they finally ended 47 years of frustration.

Merrill beat Onalaska 38-35 in the Division two sectional final to advance to the state semifinals Friday against Waunakee.

It's something that didn't look possible earlier this season. The Blue Jays finished the regular season just 11-11 and fifth in the valley, but they never doubted themselves and turned it on at just the right time.

In Division four, Marathon punched its ticket to state by routing Oshkosh Lourdes 63-37.

This will be the Raiders first trip to state since 1984 and something they've built for, for three seasons.

After losing in the sectional finals two straight years, they say it feels good to be on the winning end this time around.
