Irene Basil

Irene Basil, age 85, Pike Lake, died on Friday, March 11, 2011 under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Hospice House, Wausau.

She was born on June 17, 1925 in the Township of Sharon, Portage County, the daughter of the late Nick and Martha (Schulist) Kulas. On June 26, 1954, Irene was united in marriage to William Basil in Detroit, MI. He preceded her in death on March 16, 2007.

Irene moved to Detroit to be with family after the death of her mother at the age of 10. She worked in the banking industry and JL Hudson in Detroit. The couple moved to Pike Lake and went into partnership with Hank and Evelyn Trzebiatowski, owning the Pike Lake Resort for many years. Irene was an active member of St. Florian's Catholic Church, Hatley and it's Rosary Society and was a communion distributor and sang in the senior choir. She was also a member of the Burns Post #388 VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Irene enjoyed her home on Pike Lake and enjoyed planting flowers and feeding the birds and ducks.

Survivors include a son, Bob (Kathy) Basil, Wausau, a sister Evelyn Trzebiatowski, Pike Lake; brother, Leonard Kulas, Eland and two God-children, Elroy Koskey Jr., Wausau and Mary Trzebiatowski, St. Paul, MN. In addition to her husband and parents, Irene was preceded in death by her siblings, Barney, Joseph, Edward, Helen, Kathleen, Estelle, Emily and Harriet. The family would like to thank Palliative Care, Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and Hospice House for all of their loving care.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 AM on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at St. Florian's Catholic Church, Hatley. The Rev. Alan Burkhardt will officiate. Interment will be in the Parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 9:30 AM until the time of service at the church. There will be a Rosary recited at 10AM by the Rosary Society.
