Local Red Cross assists Japan

by Nate Barrett

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The American Red Cross needs your help to assist with the aftermath of the disaster in Japan.

Nearly 9 thousand miles to our west, Japan is recovering from one of the worst natural disasters in history.

Here in Central Wisconsin some are doing all they can to help.

In Wausau the local chapter of the Red Cross is collecting money to help the relief efforts in Japan.

Today, we spoke with communication and volunteer director Kayla Schmidt who described the outpouring of local support right here in Central Wisconsin.

Kayla Schmidt/Communication, Volunteer Director: "We've had several calls from individuals who are wondering if they can be deployed overseas to help in Japan, if they can donate, whatever it might be that they are interested in.

The folks here in central Wisconsin really have big hearts and they definitely want to help those effected by this disaster."

Schmidt told us that while the local Red Cross is not planning on deploying any volunteers, there is still plenty you can do to help. In this time of need prayers and donations are gladly accepted.

If you would like to get involved in the relief efforts you can donate at the RedCross website or text Red Cross to 90999.
