Minn. man who killed stepdad with hammer sentenced

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A St. Paul man who beat his stepfather to death with a claw hammer in December has been sentenced to more than 32 years in prison.

The Star Tribune reports 49-year-old Dean Porter pleaded guilty on Jan. 31 to killing 69-year-old Bill Shocinski a month earlier.

Porter said he killed Shocinski following an argument. Shocinski's two children said the killing had gone unreported for at least five days.

Porter stole his deceased mother's credit card and spent it to its $5,000 limit. Shocinski knew the money had been stolen, but told another son that he didn't suspect Porter.

Porter had been living with Shocinski since Porter's mother died in January 2010. She had been Shocinski's second wife.
