MERRILL (WAOW)-- Last Thursday a rally to recall Senator Jim Holperin turned tense, when pro-Holperin demonstrators engulfed petitioners.
"There's no way someone could get through the crowd," said Carol Cady of Arbor Vitae.
Witnesses also say someone vandalized petitions.
In a press release sent out Monday, leaders from the Senator Holperin Recall Committee claimed the Merrill police did not intervene.
But now they are recalling their own claims by saying they believe local authorities did as much as they could.
"Now that we've talked with them I feel a lot more comfortable understanding the predicament that they were in," said organizer Kim Simac.
Merrill Police say the incidents in question happened before they arrived and with just a few officers trying to manage a large crowd, they did not directly witness the alleged issues.
In spite of the incident, rally leaders say they will continue their effort to recall Holperin and stand behind Governor Walker.
Authorities from the Merrill Police Department say they investigating claims that there was profanity and violence at last week's rally.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Merrill Police Department.
