NEW YORK (AP) -- Disappointing U.S. economic news and more worries about the nuclear crisis in Japan are sending stocks lower Wednesday morning.

The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that new home construction fell to the second-lowest level on record in February.

Japan temporarily suspended work at a stricken nuclear plant after a surge in radiation made it too dangerous for workers to remain at the facility. That came a day after Japan's prime minister said four crippled reactors at a nuclear power plant were leaking dangerous amounts of radiation.

The disaster is expected to weigh on Japan's economy, the world's third-largest.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 107, or 0.9 percent, to 11,748 in midday trading.  The S&P 500 fell 10, or 0.8 percent, to 1,272. The Nasdaq composite fell 21, or 0.8 percent, to 2,646.
