Milwaukee, WI (AP)--The infant mortality rate in the state's largest city dropped in 2010.

According to Milwaukee health department figures released Thursday, 96 infants died in their first year compared to 121 in 2009. That's a 14 percent drop.

The decline puts the infant mortality rate at 9.44 deaths per 1,000 live births. The infant mortality rate in 2009 was 11.

City officials say the decrease is encouraging, but a one-year change could be a statistical quirk and they stressed the city still faces a public health crisis.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Milwaukee's infant mortality rate of 11 children per 1,000 births was among the worst in the nation.
