Local unemployment numbers down

by Nate Barrett

WAUSAU (WAOW)- Fewer people are filing for unemployment benefits across the country and here in Wisconsin.

The labor department reports that nationally 385-thousand people applied for unemployment benefits last week. That's sixteen thousand fewer than the previous week, and is the lowest we've seen since July of 2008.

Labor analysts says they see the same in our area.

Tom Younger/Job Service Manager: "I think we are seeing a lot more hopefulness on the part of the people that are coming in looking for jobs. It's still tight, people are still obviously worried about finding the right job, but I think we are honestly seeing a lot of good evidence in our job order processing system that our businesses are starting to bounce back."

Younger adds that people who take advantage of their help find work about five weeks quicker than those who don't.

Mark your calendar.. a job fair is scheduled for April 13th.
